about

CIRCLE OF STONES

I would love to report that these sounds, and importantly, the idea to produce them came from experiencing a mystical misty moorland morning with the outline of standing stones fading in and out of focus or a special interest in ancient sites and monuments. The truth is, I was reminded of a place I visited in my late teens and early twenties by a post from Paul Conneally (Little Onion) on social media. I don’t use social media all that much but the post was posted, read, and the connection was made.
I read about a visit to the Nine Ladies Stone Circle on Stanton Moor near where I lived in my formative years, had a strong recollection of being there and needed to explore the memory in sound.
I began by creating a ‘sound wash’ in an attempt to evoke the mystery surrounding this ancient monument. Then, I used some sound design software to create a graphic image of the nine standing stones plus one. The plus one is a single stone over to the east of the main circle and marked, curiously, Bill Stumps and mentioned in Dickens’ Pickwick Papers. Each stone had a ‘voice’ created for it and the graphic representation used to trigger these voices. I imagined the voices of the stones communicating in some way and tried to weave them together in the soundscape. The result is Circle of Stones (The Nine Ladies).
